Stacey and La Donna: Team Zapatos Locos - "Crazy Shoes"

THE AVON BREAST CANCER 3-DAY
AUGUST 9-11, 2002
ENUMCLAW TO SEATTLE

Stacey and La Donna have committed to joining thousands of people that will walk 60 miles between Enumclaw and Seattle as part of the Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day. Obviously, we deeply believe in the cause! Breast cancer has already touched us personally and, according to statistics, will probably hit even closer to home during our lifetimes. We have chosen this event as a motivation to make our own health a greater priority as well as to provide financial support to the efforts of Avon on prevention and research of this disease.

According to the American Cancer Society, over 182,000 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year and over 40,000 will die. Most of them (80%) won't have any genetic predisposition to the disease. It will come out of the blue - detected with a mammogram, during a visit to the doctor's office, or in a self-exam at home. That's if it's detected at all. Fewer than a third of American women follow the recommended guidelines for self-examination and regular mammography. Many of them don't have access to a doctor, or are too afraid of the results to find out.

But finding out is crucial - more than 97% of women who are diagnosed with breast cancer at an early stage survive for more than five years. The death rate from the disease is declining - people are surviving. But in order to do so, they need access to medical care, access to screening, education and treatment. And we ultimately need a cure.

Every woman is at risk for breast cancer, and every person who walks 60 miles with boldness and tenacity is making a tremendous contribution to the fight agains this disease.

The net proceeds from the Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day fund many different areas of breast cancer, including: medical research and clinical care; a national financial assistance program for medically underserved women who need breast biopsies and support services; advocacy training; community-based breast health programs and more (for details visit www.avoncrusade.com).
